How I Got Here

Since you took the trouble of finding your way to this site, I thought it would only be fair to let you know how it is that I ended up here.

A little less than two years ago, I was spending far too much of my time commuting for my job. I would spend several hours each day on the train to and from Manhattan and, to fill the time, I read....a lot. While I was making my way through a significant number of books each year, I was bothered by the aimless nature of my reading habits. I grabbed whatever happened to spark my interest at a given moment. So I'd end up with books on the plague, the Gold Rush, Joseph Smith, and on and on and on.

As an alternative to this randomness, I decided to give myself a project to guide my reading. Aside from being a nerd, I'm also a bit anal, so this felt like a natural move for me. I combined my love of history and politics and took on the challenge of reading a biography of every president. It took me roughly a year and a half to complete this race through the presidency and it was an fun, challenging way to pass the time on my commute.

At the same time, I had no way of knowing that I'd end up at this point--obsessed enough with the presidency to start a site to track my ongoing deep dives into this world. While I may have reached an arbitrary finish line when I made it to the last page of David Maraniss's Obama biography, I didn't feel the sense of accomplishment I anticipated when I started reading Ron Chernow's Washington. What I've come to realize is that I wasn't actually finishing something. Looking back and marvelling at how little I still knew about these complicated men and their times, I realized right away that I would be revisiting them with a renewed purpose.

So I wanted to create this space to record my journey and, I hope, connect with those of you who share my fascination with all things presidential. Thanks for visiting!
